    Iraq Visa Policy

Based on the current law of Iraq, citizens from most countries require visas if they must visit Iraq; however, there are selected countries on the visa-on-arrival list. You can get a visa at selected airports if you are from an eligible country. There is also a banned list of countries whose citizens are not allowed to enter Iraq.

    Visa On Arrival

The visa-on-arrival program is a special visa for foreigners from approved countries who may travel to Iraq without visas, but the moment they reach the entry point, they will be issued visas. This Visa is obtainable at approved land, sea, and air routes in the country. All the visitor has to do is arrive with a valid passport and sufficient funds to cover their expenses throughout their visits. Basra International Airport and Al Najaf International Airport are the two main international airports where visas on arrival are issued.

    Iraq Visa Exemption

Citizens from selected countries may visit Iraq without visas and stay for a limited period. The duration ranges from 30 to 90 days, depending on the visitor’s nationality.

There is also an exemption for diplomats from selected countries too.

    Iraq Kurdistan Region Online Visa

There is an online visa program for visitors coming to the Kurdistan region of Iraq. They can access the region and get the opportunity of staying for up to 30 days. This process is facilitated through the completion of an online application form. After completing and submitting the form, a confirmation message will be forwarded to your email, which will be used to get a visa stamp at the point of entry.

Visitors are advised that this e-visa stamp is only accepted for entry into Kurdistan, not other parts of Iraq. It cannot be used outside the authorized areas of Erbil, Duhok, and Sulaymaniyah. People who may want to exit the region through any other region in Iraq will be made to pay a fine, deported, or even prevented from doing so. In the worst cases, violators may even be banned from entering Iraq for the next two years.

Visitors interested in visiting other parts of the country are advised to travel through any approved border crossings or Najaf or Basra airports. By so doing, they will be free to tour any part of the country without conditions or restrictions.

It is also necessary to note that the e-visa for the Kurdistan region can be extended and converted into a work visa should the holder choose to. It is valid for 45 days from entry, and extensions can be done twice for a combined 90 days of stay.

    Banned Country

Israel is the only country on the banned list, so Israeli passport holders are not allowed into Iraq. They are also banned from transiting to other countries through Iraq. The only region open to them is the Kurdistan region.

Key Information About Iraq – Kurdistan e Visa And Travel Information and Tips

Restricted Feature: As you plan your application, don’t forget that this e-visa only allows you to access the Kurdistan region of Iraq, not the entire country. You can only travel to this region directly from your base. Furthermore, you can’t access the rest of the country after landing in Kurdistan. If you wish to visit other parts of Iraq, apply for an Iraqi visa. With an Iraqi visa, you can land in the country and then travel to Kurdistan without restrictions.

Applying For Extension: Your e-visa only allows you to stay for 30 days but with the option to extend the Visa twice by 30 days each. If you must apply for an extension, ensure you do so at least a few days before your Visa expires. Visit the nearest KRG administrative offices in Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, or Erbil. If you apply twice, the visa officer will receive your application and approve your stay the first and second time. Note that this action commands an application fee.

Entry Routes: When traveling to Kurdistan, only use the approved routes, as you will be prohibited from accessing the region through Iraq. You can only access Kurdistan through Erbil International Airport if you are coming by air. If you are traveling by sea, the Umm Qasr seaport on the Kurdistan side is the route, while land travelers can only access the region through the borders it shares with Syria, Turkey, and Iran.

Passport: Your passport must be valid to cover your stay in the country. For instance, if you decide to extend your stay by 60 days, you must make sure that your passport will remain valid during the extra weeks.

Applying For Work: Visitors can convert their e-visa into a work visa by securing a work permit, but that will only be after they arrive in the region. If they secure a job at any point, they can visit any of the Administrative offices to apply for a work permit which will be granted to them after filing an application.

Be Security Conscious: The Kurdish region can sometimes be volatile, so do your due diligence before traveling. When in the region, be conscious of your environment and stay away from known hotspots with previous records of violence.
